Pirates pick up eighth straight win with sweep over Raiders

COSTA MESA -- The winning continues for the Orange Coast College men's volleyball team as the Pirates rolled past visiting Moorpark, 25-13, 25-21, 25-21, on Wednesday night in a nonconference matchup inside the Peterson Gym.

Jordan Hoppe led the Pirate offense with 13 kills and nine digs, while Justin Kam chipped in 12 kills and seven digs, helping Coast win its eighth straight match (9-1).

Serving was once again strong for Coast as Matthew Johnson and Chase Moothart combined for five assists, while setter Colby Elder dished out 27 assists.

It was a fast and effective start for the Pirates in the opening set as they jumped out to an 8-2 lead as Austin Marriott was a force in the middle early on, notching a pair of his team-best four blocks on the night.

Moorpark (2-9) got within 9-6, but Coast turned on the jets from there and used a 16-7 run to close out the opening set.

A trio of Hoppe kills and a pair of Johnson aces highlighted an 11-6 run to start the second set for Coast.

Moorpark took advantage of a few Pirate miscues and trimmed the OCC lead down to 23-20 before Coast used a Hoppe kill and a Marriott block to close things out.

Trailing 7-5 early in the third set, Coast used a 10-3 run to grab the lead for good. It stayed close the rest of the way, but the Pirates never lost the lead and kept the Moorpark "runs" to a minimum.

The Pirates will play at L.A. Pierce College on Friday night, beginning at 6 p.m. before opening Orange Empire Conference play at Golden West College on Wednesday, also at 6 p.m. OCC's next home match will be on Wednesday, March 22 against Fullerton (6 p.m.).
