Pirates open season with dominant sweep over defending champs

WOODLAND HILLS -- On paper, it was a showdown of last year's state championship match, but in fact, only one team looked the part as the Orange Coast College men's volleyball team opened the 2019 season by blowing away defending champion L.A. Pierce College, 25-10, 25-13, 25-17, on Wednesday night.

In a match that took less time then the drive to gymnasium, the Pirates used their depth and skill an numerous positions to dispose the Brahmas. Coast ripped 33 total kills and had just seven hitting errors the entire night.

Sophomore Jack Flynn had six kills, while Clark Steele added five for the Pirates. Will Anderson and Hunter Dickey each ripped four, while Matthew Gemeinhardt and Kyle McCauley each contributed three as head coach Travis Turner emptied his bench and used the majority of his squad throughout the night.

The setting combination of Enzo Boggio and Jordan Rodriguez combined for 20 assists, while in the middle, 6-foot-10 freshman Aiden Wolf-Nielsen was a perfect 4-for-4 in hills and also added three block assists.

Coast even held the defensive edge on the Brahmas with 31 digs to LAPC's 20, with Braden Neumann leading the way with eight and Flynn with six.

The Pirates will return to the Peterson Gym on Saturday for a four-team quad with Santa Monica City, Long Beach City and Irvine Valley. The final match of the evening will be the Pirates hosting the LBCC Vikings at 7 p.m. From there, the Pirates will return to action on Friday at home, against El Camino College, beginning at 6 p.m.
