Pirates dominate action at four-team quad

COSTA MESA -- After three matches on Saturday, the showdown was set as the host Orange Coast College men's volleyball team took on perennial powerhouse Long Beach City in the finale of the North/South Quad. But in the end, it was a dominant performance by the Pirates, who swept past the Vikings, 25-22, 25-16, 25-19, inside the Peterson Gym.
Fresh off the heels of a 25-13, 25-14, 25-11 sweep over Santa Monica City College in the early afternoon, the Pirates (3-0) appear to be clicking on all cylinders in the early portion of the season.
Against the Vikings (2-1), Kyle McCauley led the way with 10 kills. Jack Flynn added eight kills, and the MB combination of Aiden Wolf-Nielsen and Will Anderson went a combined 14-for-20 hitting and finished with seven kills each.
The setting duo of Jordan Rodriguez and Enzo Boggio combined for 37 assists, while McCauley anchored the defense with a team-best seven digs.
In the opening set, Coast jumped out to a 5-2 advantage only to see LBCC go on a 10-3 run to grab a 12-8 advantage. Strong serving by Kyler Tufuga (three aces) highlighted the run.
But the Pirates regrouped and used a 7-2 run of their own to regain the lead at 15-14.
From there, both teams traded blows with neither team getting away from the other. Showing their ability to score at will, the final 10 OCC points all came from successful kills, with McCauley nailing four and Garrett Halsey chipping in three to preserve the Pirates' opening-set victory.
From there, it was ALL Orange Coast as the Pirates continued to spread their offense around, which thinned out the Vikings' defense all night long. In the second set, several unforced errors by Long Beach helped give Coast a 17-9 advantage and from there, the Pirates cruised to a two-set lead in the match.
Long Beach grabbed an early 12-10 lead in the third set, only to see OCC rip off 11 of the next 13 points over the Vikings to grab control of the match.
Coast will return to action on Friday at home against El Camino College, beginning at 6 p.m.
