Pirates ground Jets in three-set sweep

COSTA MESA -- Kyle McCauley had eight kills, three aces and five digs to lead the Orange Coast College men's volleyball team to a three-set sweep over visiting Miramar College on Tuesday night inside the Peterson Gym.

Jake Loudenback added six kills, while Clark Steele and and Garrett Halsey each added four as the Pirates (7-0) rolled to a 25-19, 25-14, 25-17 win over the Jets (1-4).

Setters Enzo Boggio (four digs) and Jordan Rodriguez combined for 31 assists for OCC, while the Pirate defense kept the Jets in check all night long. In fact, the Jets only had 10 kills as a team the entire night.

OCC jumped out to a 14-9 lead in the opening set, thanks to three kills from McCauley and a pair from Anderson. OCC maintained its comfortable lead throughout the opening set, in spite of several unforced errors. Miramar got to within five at 24-19 before an Anderson kill ended the opening set.

The Jets stayed a little closer to the Pirates through most of the second set, trailing only by four at 18-14. However, OCC closed out the set with seven straight points, highlighted by back-to-back kills by Jack Flynn.

Miramar saw its first lead of the night at 4-3 in the third set before OCC went on a 15-4 run to grab control of things the rest of the way.

The Pirates will return to action on Friday at San Diego Mesa College, beginning at 1 p.m. OCC's next home match will be on Wednesday, Feb. 27 against Palomar, beginning at 6 p.m.
