Pirates keep victory train rolling with sweep over Hornets

COSTA MESA -- The No. 1-ranked Orange Coast College men's volleyball team improved to a perfect 17-0 record this year with a three-set win over visiting Fullerton College in an Orange Empire Conference matchup inside the Peterson Gym.

With 22 team blocks and 12 aces, the Pirates leaned on all facets of the game to dispose of the visiting Hornets, 25-10, 25-13, 25-22, and no one player showed that more than sophomore outside Kyle McCauley.

McCauley, last year's state leader in kills as a freshman, led the way with eight kills, but also notched seven aces to go along with four digs and a pair of block assists.

Garrett Harlsey added six kills for Coast, while Hunter Dickey had a solid third game with four kills. Middle blocker Jake Loudenback and opposite Clark Steele combined for 13 block assists, while Enzo Boggio dished out 21 assists. On defense, Coast racked up 23 digs and was led by libero Colby Cook with seven.

For the Hornets (5-11, 0-4), Asonte Lewis-Owens made the most of his opportunities and notched nine kills.

After a pair of runaway wins by the Pirates, the third and final set went back and forth for most of the way. Coast grabbed an early 6-4 lead and from there, both teams traded points, all the way until a Halsey kill gave OCC back-to-back points and an 18-15 advantage.

Fullerton kept in close and pulled to within a point on two different occasions (21-20 and 23-22), but a FC net violation and a kill by McCauley ended the third set, and the match, in favor of the Pirates.

Coast will return to action on Friday at home, against Irvine Valley, beginning at 6 p.m.
