Pirates pick up two huge road wins
SANTA MONICA -- The Orange Coast College men's volleyball team took its act on the road and pulled out a pair of impressive wins against two of the top teams in the state last week.
On Wednesday, the Pirates (5-0) head up to Long Beach City College for a rematch against the always-tough Vikings in a rematch of the past two state championship finals teams.
Coast, a straight-set winner against LBCC on Feb. 3 at the John Altobelli Quad, needed all five sets this time, but in the end, the Pirates prevailed, 25-23, 22-25, 23-25, 25-15, 15-10.
Myles Henderson had a HUGE night for the Pirates, leading the way with 14 kills, four digs, five total blocks and seven service aces.
Kam Vakilian added nine kills and seven total blocks, while Zane Jacobsen anchored the front line for Coast with seven kills and three total blocks.
Landon Seymour dished out 33 assists, while Jase Fukushima led the Coast defense with seven digs.
Coast was strong at the net with 29 total team blocks (just 18 for LBCC), while having fewer service errors (OCC 16, LBCC 22) and more aces (OCC 11, LBCC 5).
Two nights later, the Pirates were again heading up the freeway, this time to take on Santa Monica City College. There, Coast pulled out a four-set win, 23-25, 25-23, 25-19, 25-17.
Cole Hauser sparked the offensive efforts for the Pirates with a match-high 15 kills, while Vakilian added 12 kills and five total blocks, while Henderson chipped in 10 kills and a team-best 10 digs.
It was another 33-assists performance for Seymour against the Corsairs and the sophomore setter also notched nine digs.
Coast will return to the friendly confines of the Peterson Gym for a pair of nonconference matches this week ... against San Diego Mesa on Wednesday at 6 p.m. and on Friday against Palomar, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
