Pirate cruise to win over Hawks

COSTA MESA -- The winning continues for the Orange Coast College men's volleyball team as the Pirates rolled to a 25-20, 25-17, 25-15 Orange Empire Conference win over visiting Santiago Canyon College on Friday night inside the Peterson Gym.

Oskar Hingel led the defending state champs and this year's top-ranked Pirates (15-0, 6-0 in the OEC) with 11 kills, while Kam Vakilian added six kills and four block assists. Peter Kelso contributed five kills and three block assists, while David Polster ripped five kills to go along with a team-best nine digs and five aces.

The win all but wraps up the Orange Empire Conference title for the Pirates for the seventh straight season. Coast has been the OEC champs every year since the OEC reformed its conference for men's volleyball back in 2016-17 (no 2020 season due to COVID pandemic).

The Pirates will host Golden West College (14-3, 4-2) on Wednesday, beginning at 6 p.m. The Rustlers are having a resurgent season, earning wins over traditionally powerhouse programs, including Long Beach, San Diego Mesa and Irvine Valley and are coached by former OCC Pirate, Nick Amado.

In their previous matchup this year, the Pirates played at GWC and took care of business in a four-set win, 25-22, 21-25, 25-22, 25-18. Myles Henderson led the way with 17 kills and seven digs, while Cole Hauser added 11 kills and six digs.
