Top-ranked Pirates keep on rolling with sweep over Griffins

COSTA MESA -- The wins continue to pile of for the defending state champion Orange Coast College men's volleyball team as the top-ranked Pirates cruised to a three-set win over No. 8 Grossmont College on Wednesday night inside the Peterson Gym.

Led by a 10-kill, six-dig, four-block night from sophomore outside hitter, Cole Hauser, the Pirates toppled the Griffins, 25-10, 25-15, 25-20 in just over an hour's work.

Andrew Robbins had a big night in the middle with eight kills for OCC, while Jacob Surette and Myles Henderson each had seven kills, with Henderson added three aces.

Landon Seymour dished out 26 assists and led the team with eight digs as the Pirates gone 24-1 over their last 25 matches dating back to last season.

Coast came out swinging and took advantage of their height and power in the middle and jumped out to a 16-5 advantage. Robbins collected four of his eight kills during that opening-set run. Grossmont had no answer for the depth of the Pirates' attack as OCC easily took the opening set.

The Griffins hung around longer in the second set, but the result was the same for the Pirates as an 8-7 lead expanded to an 18-9 advantage after a 10-2 run took care of things for Coast.

With Coast tinkering with lineup combinations in the third set, the score stayed much closer in the third set. In fact, Grossmont (5-5) managed to grab an 18-17 lead before Coast went to another gear and closed things out with an 8-2 run.

OCC will kick off Orange Empire Conference play on Wednesday night at home against Fullerton College, beginning at 6 p.m.
