Clean sweep for Pirates at Southwestern tournament

CHULA VISTA -- The Orange Coast College men's water polo team went a perfect 4-for-4 over the weekend at the Southwestern College Dia De Los Muertos Tournament with wins over Ventura (20-3), Palomar (26-8), Southwestern (16-6) and Grossmont (21-8).

In the opener on Friday against the VC Pirates, the OCC Pirates were led offensively by Andrej Maodus with five goals, while Nicholas Fichman added four and Ryan Baumann tossed in three. In goal, Connor Halloran had 14 saves, while keeping Ventura to just three goals for the entire contest.

In the Friday afternoon matchup with Palomar, Coast nearly matched its school-record best of 28 goals, set two weeks ago as Baumann paced the attack with eight goals, while Maodus added seven. Halloran picked up the easy win, while picking up seven saves. 

On Saturday, Coast took on the host Jaguars and were "held" to the lowest output of the weekend with 16 goals as Wyatt Ramirez scored a team-best four goals, while Jared Smailes added three and Charlie Shobe and Mathew Dore each tossed in two. Halloran and Parsa Pakdel combined for 11 saves for OCC's third win at the tournament.

In the finale on Saturday afternoon, the offense continued to roll with a 21-8 win over Grossmont with Fichman leading the way with five goals. Maodus, Smailes and Baumann each added three. while Luke Rhone scored twice. Again, the tandem of Halloran and Pakdel were solid in goal, stopping a combined eight shots against the Griffins.

Up next for OCC is the Orange Empire Conference Championships, hosted by Golden West College, beginning on Thursday.
