Pirates earn split at GWC Tournament

HUNTINGTON BEACH -- Playing in one of the toughest tournaments in Southern California, the Orange Coast College men's water polo teams went 2-2 this past weekend at the Golden West College Tournament.

On Friday, Coast opened things with a hard-fought battle against Orange Empire Conference rival, Saddleback College. Coast put up a good effort, but the Bobcats swam away with an 18-11 win. Carmelo Bangs led the Pirate offense with four goals, while Jacob Muller added two goals and an assist.

Coast took out its aggression on the afternoon opponent, Ventura College, and cruised to a 25-4 win. Nine different Pirate swimmers had a multiple-goal performance against the VC Pirates, including Muller, Beau Bradley and Grant Busta, who each scored three times.

The goalkeeper duties were shared by Roman Christenot and Darius Kashani and the duo combined for nine saves in the win.

The lopsided scores continued in the Pirates' favor in the Saturday morning matchup as Coast cruised to a 23-4 win over Southwestern College. Ryan O'Donovan had the hot hand against the Jaguars with a team-best five goals, while Bangs chipped in three goals of his own. Again, the goalie tandem of Christenot and Kashani did their jobs well with a combined 14 saves.

Coast wrapped up the tournament against the host Rustlers, with GWC prevailing, 15-5. Caden Carpenter had two goals, while single tallies were turned in by O'Donoval, Muller and Mason Parker. Christenot went the distance in goal for Coast and notched 15 saves.

The Pirates will return to action at Cypress College on Wednesday, beginning at 3:15 p.m.
