Pirates take 2-of-3 over weekend

LONG BEACH -- The Orange Coast College men's water polo team picked up a pair of impressive wins over the weekend, including a 16-13 victory over four-year program Westcliff University on Friday night.

In Friday's win, under the lights at the OCC Aquatics Pavilion, Coast used a strong second half to keep the visiting Warriors from coming all the way back.

Jackson Bryson and Caden Carpenter each had three goals for the Pirates, while Chad Harris and Jacob Muller each added two goals. In goal, Roman Christenot was solid with 12 saves against Westcliff.

From there, the Pirates took to the road and competed in the one-day, Long Beach City College Mini-Tournament.

In the opener, the Pirates (16-8) fell to West Valley College, 14-12. Once again, the offense was spread out with Carpenter, Muller, Carmelo Bangs and Mason Parker each with two goals. Christenot notched six saves, but it wasn't enough against one of the top teams in the state in West Valley (19-2).

In the afternoon match, Coast took on the host Vikings and prevailed, 13-10. With the match tied at 9 after three quarters, the Pirates turned up defense and held the Vikings to just one goal in the fourth, while the offense found the back of the net four more times. Carpenter was a goal-scoring machine for the Pirates with six goals. Ryan O'Donovan picked up three goals of his own, while Bangs tossed in a pair. Christenot was again solid in net with 14 saves against the host Vikings.

Coast returns to action on Wednesday at Fullerton College, beginning at 3 p.m.
