Pirates show no mercy in 5-inning win over Rustlers

HUNTINGTON BEACH -- A big six-run fifth inning was the difference-maker for the Orange Coast College softball team as the Pirates rolled through Golden West College and left town with a 9-0 mercy-rule win over the host Rustlers on Wednesday.

Taylor Andolsek went 3-for-3 with two runs and three RBI for the Pirates (13-10, 5-5 in the Orange Empire Conference), while Gianna Gozo added three hits, a run and two RBI. Emilie Lapena set the table for the Pirates' offense in the leadoff spot by reaching base three times and scoring two runs.

That was plenty of offensive support for pitcher Ashlee Kean, who threw four shutout innings to pick up the win, allowing three hits and walking just one with six strikeouts.

A pair of RBI-hits by Gozo in the first and third innings put Coast up, 2-0. The Pirates made it 3-0 in the top of the fourth with an RBI-double to right-center off the bat of Andolsek.

Coast blew things open in the top of the fifth with six more runs. RBI-hits came from Nadia Perez, and Evangelina Moore, while Andolsek highlighted the big inning with a two-run single to left.

With the loss, the Rustlers drop to 7-11 overall, 1-9 in the OEC.

The Pirates will return to action on Friday at home against Santiago Canyon, beginning at 2 p.m.
