Pirates blast away early, rout Citrus, 12-0

COSTA MESA -- The suspense ended early on Monday as the Orange Coast College softball team scored early and often en route to a 12-0, five-inning, nonconference win over visiting Citrus College.

The Pirates (11-8) flexed their muscles right from the opening inning and scored all 12 runs over the first two innings.

Nadia Perez went 2-for-3, including a three-run home run, with two runs and four RBI for OCC, while Hailey Pichardo added three this, two runs and three RBI.

OCC's pitching duo of Ashlee Kean and Ashley Hester combined on a five-inning, two-hit shutout with four walks and nine strikeouts.

Perez capped off the Pirates' four-run first with her three-run blast over the left-field fence, while Pichardo's three-run double to left-center scored three of OCC's eight runs in the bottom of the second.

Coast pounded out 13 hits, including three doubles and a home run, in just four innings of at-bats. Eight different Pirate batters had at least one hit, eight different Pirates scored at least one run and six Pirates collected at least one RBI.

The Pirates hope to keep the hot heating alive as they return to Orange Empire Conference play on Wednesday against Cypress College, beginning at 3 p.m. at the OCC Softball Complex.
