Big first inning helps Pirates tame Tigers, 12-4

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College softball team scored 11 times in the first inning and cruised to a 12-4, six-inning win over visiting Riverside City College at the OCC Softball Complex on Monday.

Taking advantage of seven first-inning walks by RCC pitchers, the Pirates (14-15, 6-8 in the Orange Empire Conference) needed only three hits to plate 11 runs. The final six runs in the frame came courtesy of a three-run double off the bat of Nadia Perez and a three-run home run from Taylor Andolsek. An RBI-single by Julia Douglass and run-scoring walks from Gianna Gozo, Gillian Gordan, Eva Moore also highlighted the Pirates' offense in the first.

To the credit of the Tigers (10-22, 2-13), relief pitcher Carrah Van Houton kept the Pirates off the scoreboard for the next four innings, while the RCC offense pushed the game past the fifth with solo runs in the third and fourth innings, followed by a two-run fifth.

Coast ended the game in the bottom of the sixth. Perez reached on an error and advanced to second on a single by Pichardo. Andolsek sent Perez to third with a deep fly ball to left and she scored on a double-steal attempt to end the game.

Douglass went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Emilie Lapena added two hits and two runs scored. Lapena, Perez, Pichardo and Andolsek each scored twice for the Pirates.

Janelle Malone went 2-for-2 with a double, two runs and one RBI for Riverside.

The Pirates return to action on Wednesday at Cypress College, beginning at 3 p.m. OCC's next home game is set for Monday against Golden West, also at 3 p.m.
