Pirates continue to roll with 4-1 win over Dons
COSTA MESA -- Under sunny skies, the Orange Coast College softball team kept the good vibes flowing at the OCC Softball Stadium with a hard-fought 4-1 win over visiting Santa Ana on Friday in an Orange Empire Conference matchup.
The Pirates (10-2, 2-0 in the OEC) and Dons (7-11, 0-2) traded zeroes for 4 1/2 innings before Coast finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead for good.
McKenzie reached base to lead off the bottom of the fifth on an error and an infield single off the bat of Olivia Pedraza put runners on first and second with nobody out. After a strikeout, both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch before Jasmyn Morales broke the scoreless tie with a single to center, scoring Koshi to put OCC up, 1-0.
After Morales stole second, with two outs, a costly SAC error scored both Pedraza and Morales to put Coast up, 3-0.
Santa Ana would make it 3-1 in the top of the sixth inning, but the Pirates got that run back after a Koshi single was followed up with an RBI-triple off the bat of Pedraza, who went 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI. Koshi went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
But the hero for the Pirates on Friday was starting pitcher Daniella Sanchez, who went the distance to improve her record to 3-0. The freshman standout held the Dons to just one run on five hits with no walks and five strikeouts.
OCC will return to action on Tuesday at Fullerton College (3 p.m.) to kick off a three-game series with the Hornets. Game 2 will be at OCC on Thursday (2 p.m.) with the series finale back at Fullerton College on Friday (2 p.m.).
