Pirates take consolation title at Cypress Tournament

CYPRESS -- The Orange Coast College women's basketball team went 2-1 during last weekend's Cypress College Tournament with wins over Grossmont (77-56) and West L.A. (85-80), which followed an opening loss to East L.A., 79-72.

In the lost to East L.A., Coast (4-4) carried a 61-56 lead heading into the third quarter, only to see the Huskies, outscore the Pirates, 23-11 in the fourth. OCC was led by Jenna Rodriguez, who dominated the paint with 27 points (13-of-22 from the floor) and 12 rebounds. Megan Lewis added 15 points and five rebounds, while Sami Little chipped in 14 points and five rebounds.

On Saturday, Coast played in the consolation semifinals against Grossmont and used a strong first half to pull away for the win. Little was big for Coast with 23 points, seven rebounds, five assists and six steals. Rodriguez added 13 points and eight rebounds, while Chyann Pendergrass added 11 points.

The win moved the Pirates into the consolation championship, where they topped West L.A., 85-80 in overtime.

Rodriguez again anchored the OCC offense with 26 points and 13 rebounds, while Michelle Wu added 15 points, Pendergrass tossed in 13 points and dished out eight assists and Lewis added 12 points and six rebounds off the bench.

Coast will return to action on Friday at Moorpark, beginning at 5 p.m. The same two teams will then play at OCC's Peterson Gym on Saturday, also at 5 p.m.
