Strong third quarter lifts Pirates past Tigers

RIVERSIDE -- The Orange Coast College women's basketball team used a strong third-quarter performance to outlast Riverside City College, 62-56, on Wednesday night inside RCC's Wheelock Gym.

Leading 38-35 midway through the third quarter, Coast (13-8, 4-1 in the Orange Empire Conference) used a 9-0 run over a three-minute span to pull away from the host Tigers (13-8, 3-2)

Riverside got to within four (51-47) with 6:34 left in the game, but a 3-pointer by Chyann Pendergrass and a layup by Sami Little pushed OCC's lead back up to nine and the Tigers did not threaten the rest of the way.

Pendergrass led the Pirates with 18 points, connecting on 6-of-8 from 3-point range. She also dished out a season-best 11 assists. Sarah Nunes added 17 points, while Little chipped in 12 points and seven rebounds.

OCC's starters outscored the starting five from Riverside, 58-40 and the Coast defense forced 20 turnovers. Ronisha Daniels and DoyleBonet Walker each had 15 points for the Tigers.

Coast will return to action on Wednesday at home against Saddleback, beginning at 7 p.m.
