Borgelt paces Pirates past Eagles in home opener

COSTA MESA -- What the Orange Coast College women's basketball is lacking in quantity of roster, it's making up for that trait with QUALITY of roster as the shorthanded Pirates rolled to a 72-59 nonconference win over Mt. San Jacinto on Wednesday night inside the Peterson Gym.

The two-time defending state champion Pirates (4-2) -- all of nine players deep, including a starter out with an injury -- handed the Eagles (4-1) their first loss in a rematch of last year's Southern California Regional final of a year ago.

Kayla Borgelt paced the OCC offense with 25 points, while Alyssa Dreessen added 12 points and six rebounds. Zoie Lamkin added 12 points and six boards, while Melaiah Joseph added 11 points and seven rebounds. Myia Collins was a point shy of a double-double, scoring nine points while grabbing 13 rebounds.

For MSJC, Vika Afungia had 13 points and eight rebounds, while Princess McCauley added 12 points and four rebounds.

After a sluggish first quarter that saw the Eagles grab an early 19-17 lead, Coast pulled away in the middle two quarters, outscoring the Eagles 38-24 over that span.

The Eagles trailed 39-35 three minutes into the third quarter before Coast used a 13-4 run over a five-minute span to grab a 13-point advantage at 52-39 with 2:45 remaining in the quarter.

The lead remained comfortable for most of the rest of the game. MSJC got to within nine at 68-59 with just over 2 minutes left, but the Eagles would get no closer the rest of the way.

Coast took advantage of some over-aggressive defensive play by the Eagles and earned 27 trips to the free-throw line, where the Pirates made 19 and outscored MSJC 19-5 from the charity stripe, overcoming a chilly shooting percentage from 3-point land (12.5%).

The Pirates will return to action on Saturday at home against Santa Barbara City College, beginning at 2 p.m.
