Pirates finish fourth overall at 3C2A State Championships
NIPOMO -- The fabulous 2024 season has come to an end for the Orange Coast College women's golf team after the Pirates earned a fourth-place spot in the standings at the 3C2A Women's Golf State Championships, held Sunday and Monday at Monarch Dunes Golf Club.
The Pirates took on not only an elite field of the state's best golfers, but also a demanding golf course under chilly, windy conditions. Coast took them all on and finished their two rounds with a team score of 656 (313-323), trailing only champion Mt. San Antonio (631), Modesto (638) and Reedley (645). Moorpark finished fifth overall at 675, followed by Sacramento City (682), Cuyamaca (692), Santa Barbara (697) and Napa Valley (749).
"I can't tell you how proud I am of this team and the season we had this year," OCC head coach Sean Collins said. "We gave it our best and we had two solids rounds of play and that's all a coach can ask for. This group was fun to be around and I already am looking to us working on getting back here next year. This team has left its mark here at OCC and I hope our program can continue to build, grow and get even better."
Coast's scores on Monday were indicative of how the rest of the field did as the weather got colder and windier throughout the two-day event. Only 17 golfers out of the 65 in the field saw their Round 2 score improve over their Round 1 performance.
Low rounds for the Pirates on Monday were turned in by Delylah Collins and Sophia Tipton, who each shot 82s. Tipton bounced back from her opening-round 95 and her 13-shot improvement on Day 2 was the biggest improvement among any of the golfers at the championship.
Moe Pyae Sone Khin, the Day 1 leader in the clubhouse after carding an even-par, 71 on Monday, finished with an 83 for a two-round total of 154 which tied her for fifth overall at the State Finals.
Collins wrapped up her stellar two-year career at OCC with a two-round total of 161, shooting a 79 on Sunday and an 82 on Monday, finishing tied for 12th in the state.
Jeanie Tahvildari shot an 84-86-170, Lillian Thurston carded an 89-94-183 and Taylor Tuxford came in with a 97-107-204.
Coast finished the regular season 35-10 overall in the Orange Empire Conference, trailing only the 2024 state champs, Mt. SAC (40-0) in the standings.
