MISSION VIEJO -- The Orange Coast College women's soccer team went to the home of the state's top-ranked team, Saddleback College, and earned a solid 1-1 tie with the host Bobcats on Friday in an Orange Empire Conference matchup.
The state's 20th-ranked Pirates (7-3-2, 1-1-2 in the OEC) had a pair of draws against two teams ranked in the state's top-10 this week, after earning a 1-1 draw against No. 8 Golden West earlier in the week.
In Friday's stalemate with the Bobcats (8-1-1, 3-0-1), it was the Pirates who grabbed the first-half lead when Olivia Hostetler found the back of the net for her ninth goal of the season in the 32nd minute. Coast kept the Bobcats off the scoreboard the remainder of the first half and Coast carried a 1-0 advantage after the opening 45 minutes.
But the Bobcats, State Final Four participants a year ago, quickly responded in the opening minutes of the second half when Araylia Holiday ripped a shot into the goal in the 48th minute to even things at a goal apiece. It was Holiday's third goal of the season.
From there, both teams had some opportunities down the stretch, but both goalkeepers were up to the task, with OCC's Samantha Ortega (11 saves) and Saddleback's Maycie Pugh (eight saves) keeping their teams leveled in the match.
Coast will return to action on Tuesday at Santa Ana College, beginning at 3 p.m. OCC's next home match will take place on Friday against Cypress College, also at 3 p.m.
