Sims sets school record to highlight state meet performances

SAN MATEO -- Talk about ending the season on a high note for Orange Coast College high jumper Taylor Sims, who set a new school record for the Pirates at last weekend's California Community College Athletic Association State Track and Field Championships, held at the College of San Mateo.

In the 100-meter hurdles, Sims took on the top hurdlers in the state and finished with a time of 14.63 seconds. While her time was seventh-best in the event, Sims managed to put her name in the OCC history book by breaking the previous school best time of 14.73, set back in 1980 by Liz Carroll.

"It's always cool to break a 35-year-old record, so I'm very proud of Taylor," OCC head coach John Knox said. "She picked a good day to run her best race."

Fellow Pirate Hannah Heising qualified for state in the 400 hurdles and she finished eighth with a time of 1:06.08.

OCC's third state qualifier, Michaela Schaeffer, finished 11th in the triple jump with a mark of 30-feet, 3 1/4-inches.
