Pirates sweep past Hawks in three

COSTA MESA -- No five-set heart attacks for the Orange Coast College women's volleyball team on Friday night as the Pirates cruised to a straight-set victory over visiting Santiago Canyon inside the Peterson Gym.

Lily Johnson led the Pirates with 15 kills as the Pirates (15-1, 6-1 in the Orange Empire Conference) swept past the Hawks, 25-16, 25-20, 25-18.

Rylee Adair anchored the OCC defense with 25 digs, while setter Shannon Stone dished out 35 assists.

For the Hawks (3-10, 1-6), Faaliga Mikaela paced the SCC offense with 11 kills.

Coast set the tempo for the night right away, scoring the first seven points of the match as Johnson slammed a pair of kills during that span.

SCC battled throughout the night and trimmed the deficit down to four at 16-12 before Coast iced the opening set with a 9-4 run to close it out.

Santiago Canyon came out strong in the second set and carried early leads of 5-1 and 10-7 before OCC regrouped and grabbed hold of the set down the stretch. Leading 17-16, Coast used strong kills by Johnson, Raigan Ramos and Hannah Hale to finish off the second set, 25-20 and take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Coast trailed briefly in the third set at 7-6 before using a 7-1 run to grab the lead for good. SCC hung around with the Pirates for most of the third set, but could never get back to even with Coast as kills by Johnson and Cindy Gutierrez ended the match.

OCC will wrap up the opening round of conference play at Irvine Valley College on Wednesday night, beginning at 6 p.m. with first place on the line. The Lasers, the 2017 CCCAA state champions, are 10-0 overall, 6-0 in OEC play and are 30-1 in sets played all season.
