OCC women take third overall at GWC Invitational

HUNTINGTON BEACH -- With three top-20 finishes against some top competition, the Orange Coast College women's cross country team earned a solid third-place team score of 86 at the 2019 Golden West College Invitational on Friday at Central Park.

Riverside topped the field with 48 points, followed by Saddleback (67), while Oxnard (109) finished fourth and Mt. San Antonio (131) placed fifth.

OCC sophomore Meagan Silves was the Pirates' top performer as she conquered the 5K course with a fifth-place time of 20 minutes, 14.2 seconds. Teammate Kaila Gindlesperger was close behind at eighth place with a time of 20:29.9, what Emily Olson earned 19 points for the Pirates with a time of 21:28.

It was an impressive team effort for the Pirates, who had all five point-producing runners crack the top-40, including Kelsey Withers (22:10.3) and Valeria Rodriguez (22:45.7).

Other solid OCC times were turned in by Angie Mateo (23:07.2) and Morgan Novak (26:39.3).

The Pirates return to action on Friday, Oct. 4 at the Cerritos Invitational, located at Don Knabe Regional Park, beginning at 10 a.m.
