Pirates fall 4-2 at Riverside

RIVERSIDE -- The "big hit" just wasn't to be found on Friday as the Orange Coast College baseball team lost 4-2 to Riverside City College at the Evans Sports Complex.

Coast (21-10, 9-7 in OEC) trailed 2-0 before picking up single runs in the third and sixth innings to tie the game at 2.

Greg Espinosa walked with one out in the third and advanced all the way to third on a ground out by Zach Nehrir. That extra base came in handy because Espinosa would score on a throwing error by the Tigers, making it 2-1.

Cristian Salina singled in the sixth, advanced to second on an error, went to third on a ground out by Danny Jiminez and scored on a sacrifice fly by Manny Argomaniz to tie the score.

But the Tigers (20-11, 9-7) would answer back in the bottom of the sixth and take the lead for good. Riverside took advantage of a pair of Coast errors and plated two unearned runs, giving OCC starter Joe Reta (2-2) the hard-luck loss. The righty allowed four runs (two earned) on six hits over seven innings of work, walking none while striking out three.

RCC starter Edgar Gomez (7-1) pitched a little bit better for the Tigers and allowed two runs (none earned) on five hits with two walks and four strikeouts over seven innings. Joseph Sullivan pitched a scoreless eighth inning before Kenny Mathews earned his third save of the season with a scoreless ninth.

The same two teams will wrap up their season series on Tuesday at OCC's Wendell Pickens Field, beginning at 2 p.m.
