Pirates rally past Jags, 8-4

CHULA VISTA -- The Orange Coast College baseball team used some late-inning magic to top Southwestern College, 8-4, on Saturday in a nonconference matchup.

Trailing 4-0 after six innings, the Pirates (12-2) answered with two runs in the seventh, two more in the eighth and four in the ninth for the win.

Greg Espinosa got Coast on the scoreboard with an RBI-single with two outs in the seventh, scoring Jacob Hill (1-for-3, two runs, one RBI) to make it 4-1. Coast made it 4-2 thanks to a bases-loaded wild pitch, scoring the second run of the inning.

In the eighth, Steve Pollokov tied the game at 4 with a two-run single, scoring Manny Argomaniz (2-for-5, two runs) and Anthony Virgen (2-for-3, one run, two RBI).

After Coast wiggled out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the bottom of the eighth, the Pirates took the lead for good in the ninth. Zach Nehrir (2-for-6), Ricky Navarro and Austin Saenz each reached base with nobody out. Two batters later, Hill put OCC ahead 5-4 with an RBI-single, scoring Navarro.

Virgen stepped up and ripped a two-run double, scoring Saenz and Argomaniz to make it 7-4.

The four-run inning was capped off with an RBI-single from Cody Bruder.

David Wilson pitched a scoreless inning of relief to pick up the win and improve to 2-0.

The Pirates will play at Long Beach City College on Tuesday before opening up Orange Empire Conference play on Thursday at home against Golden West College. Both games are set to begin at 2 p.m.
