Pirates clobber Hornets, 16-5

COSTA MESA -- Eric Wagaman went 3-for-5 with two home runs, two runs and three RBI to lead the Orange Coast College baseball team to a convincing 16-5 Orange Empire Conference win over visiting Fullerton College on Thursday.
Wagaman's two HRs gives the sophomore first baseman 12 for the season, tops among all California community college baseball players.
Ramiro Velasco went 3-for-4 with a two-run home run and three runs scored for the No. 2-rankedPirates (25-5, 11-3 in OEC), who ripped 17 hits and seven extra-base hits against the struggling Hornets (12-18, 2-12).
Coast fell behind 2-0 in the top of the second, but quickly responded with a seven-run inning in the bottom of the second. The first six men reached base for the Pirates and Luke Hussung (2-for-4, two runs, one RBI) drove in the first run of the frame with an RBI-single to make it 2-1. After Coast tied the game on a run-scoring wild pitch, J.T. Navarro (2-for-3, two runs, three RBI) lined a two-run double to left-center, putting OCC ahead for good. An sacrifice fly by Travis Moniot was quickly followed with a two-run home run by Wagaman to cap off the seven-run frame.
Fullerton picked up a pair of runs in the top of the third to make it 7-4, but Coast responded with three runs in the fourth as Wagaman launched his second home run of the afternoon and Velasco followed three batters later with a two-run shot of his own, putting the Pirates ahead, 10-4.
Reliever John Balliet pitched four effective innings to pick up his first win of the season. The sophomore lefty allowed four hits, no walks and five strikeouts to slow down the Hornets' offense during the middle innings.
Coast looks for the series sweep on Saturday at Fullerton College, beginning at 12 p.m. OCC's next game will take place on Tuesday, April 18 against Golden West, beginning at 2 p.m.
