Pirates repeat feat with 8-1 win over Jaguars to win opening round of playoffs

COSTA MESA -- The weather stayed away and the Orange Coast College baseball team made it a quick afternoon of work with an 8-1 win over Southwestern on Saturday at Wendell Pickens Field to win the opening round of the Southern California Regional playoffs.

With the win, the top-seeded Pirates (33-9) will move on to next week's Southern California Super Regional round, where they will play the lowest remaining seed in another best-of-three series, beginning at OCC on Friday at 2 p.m.

Luke Hussung went 3-for-4 with a two-run home run and four RBI for the Pirates, while Jacob Doty added two hits, two runs and reached base four times.

Coast pounded out 14 hits against the 17th-seeded Jaguars (26-17) and held SWC to just single runs in both regional matchups.

Hussung got the "visiting" Pirates on the scoreboard first with an RBI-double to drive in Robert Teel and gave Coast a 1-0 lead. John Balliet followed with a sacrifice fly to center to score Doty and make it 2-0 before a squeeze bunt by Nolan Powers plated Hussung to cap off OCC's three-run top of the second inning.

Coast made it 5-0 when Doty walked and Hussung followed with a two-run home run to left.

In the top of the fifth, an RBI-single by Travis Moniot and another RBI-hit by Hussung pushed the Pirates' lead to 7-0.

Powers capped off the scoring with his second home run of the season, a solo shot to left, putting the Pirates up, 8-0.

Coast righty Ryan Randel pitched six shutout innings to pick up his sixth win of the season (6-3). The sophomore allowed seven hits, but no walks and five strikeouts. Cameron Jabara threw two innings (one run, three hits, one K) before Blair Lewis wrapped up the game and the series with a scoreless ninth.

For the Jaguars, Adam Lopez went 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Angel Estrada added two hits and a run scored. Starter Michael Cartwright (7-4) was tagged with the loss after giving up five runs on just three hits with two walks over 3 1/3 innings.
