Pirates cruise to 9-1 win over Vikings

LONG BEACH -- The Orange Coast College baseball team jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as the Pirates picked up a 9-1 win over host Long Beach City College on Thursday at Joe Hick Stadium.

Travis Moniot was solid from the leadoff spot, going 2-for-3 with double, a home run, three runs scored and three RBI, while J.T. Navarro added two hits, a run and an RBI for the Pirates (6-0).

Cameron Jabara (3-0) picked up the win with five strong innings of work, allowing just one unearned run on four hits. Jacob Higareda was just as strong, strikeout out four without allowing a hit over three scoreless innings of relief, while Doug Magee pitched a clean ninth inning to wrap things up.

Moniot got things going with a solo home run in the top of the first, then added a two-run double to highlight a four-run second, putting the Pirates up 5-0.

Long Beach (4-1) made it 5-1 in the fourth, before Coast used a two-run double by Eric Wagaman and a two-run home run off the bat of pinch-hitter Jake Scott to blow the game open.

The Pirates, who played Palomar on Friday in a game halted by darkness, will return to action on Tuesday at home against Southwestern, beginning at 2 p.m. The conclusion of the Pirates-Comets game will be prior to the Feb. 21 game at OCC, also at 2 p.m.
