Pirates salvage road-trip split with 11-5 win over Ventura

VENTURA -- After a tough start to a four-day road trip, the Orange Coast College baseball team snapped a frustrating two-game skid with a pair of nonconference wins over Santa Barbara (8-6) and Ventura (11-5) last weekend.

OCC (27-7), ranked No. 2 in the state, started the four-game road trip on Wednesday with an 8-7 loss at Oxnard College and followed that up with a 1-0 loss at Santa Barbara on Thursday.

On Friday, Coast again played the Vaqueros and used a pair of runs in the top of the ninth inning to pull out an 8-6 win.

Coast led 6-2 before the Vaqueros (20-14) evened things at six, heading into the final two innings.

In the ninth, the Pirates loaded the bases with nobody out and Luke Hussung drew a run-scoring walk to make it 7-6 and two batters later, Chris Ceballos singled in a run to make it 8-6.

Blair Lewis came in and tossed a scoreless ninth for his third save of the season.

Jacob White went 2-for-5 with three RBI, while Domenic Donato added two hits and two runs.

On Saturday, Coast played at Ventura College and topped the hosts, 11-5. Nolan Powers went 2-for-2 with a home run, one run and three RBI, while Hussung added a double, two runs and two RBI. Coast slugged six doubles in the game and the OCC offense provided plenty of offense for the Pirate pitching staff.

McKinley LeFore improved to 8-0 with the win, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits over seven innings.

Coast returns to Orange Empire Conference action on Tuesday at home against Golden West, beginning at 2 p.m.
