Pirates complete sweep with 12-3 win over Cougars

COSTA MESA -- It was the type of game that both teams just assume gets forgotten, but in the end, the Orange Coast College baseball team picked up a 12-3 win over Cuesta College on Saturday at Wendell Pickens Field.

Just how bad was it for both teams? Well ... the Pirates (5-0) were outhit 11-5, they stranded 14 runners on base, they went just 3-of-18 (.167) with runners in scoring position and they STILL won by nine runs.

The visiting Cougars (2-5), losers of 10 straight at OCC, gave Coast plenty of baserunners without the benefit of allowing a hit, walking 11 batters, hitting six batters, balking in two runs and committing three wild pitches.

Coast opened the bottom of the first inning with a 4-0 lead without having to put the ball in play. Cuesta starter Bryce Verplank plunked four straight batters to make it 1-0, balked in a second run, allowed an RBI-ground out by Jacob White to make it 3-0 and balked in the fourth run to make it 4-0.

In the third, Coast made it 8-0. An RBI-double by Michael Odgers made it 5-0. After a Luke Hussong walk and wild pitch put runners on second and third, the Pirate duo both scored when a wild pitch and throwing error by the Cuesta catcher made it 7-0. Travis Moniot then walked, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on another wild pitch.

On a pitch-count day, starter Cameron Jabara picked up the win for the Pirates, allowing just one run on four hits with five strikeouts.

The Pirates will return to action on Thursday at Long Beach (2 p.m.) and on Friday at Palomar (2 p.m.). OCC's next home game will be on Tuesday, Feb. 14 against LBCC, also at 2 p.m.
