Pirates cruise to 8-1 win over Southwestern

COSTA MESA -- It was a solid start to the 2019 season for the Orange Coast College baseball team as the Pirates rolled to an 8-1 win over visiting Southwestern on Tuesday at Wendell Pickens Field.

David Morgan went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Todd Jackson went 1-for-3 with a run and two RBI for the Pirates, who took advantage of erratic pitching by a Jaguar team that yielded eight hits, six walks and a pair of run-scoring wild pitches and passed balls.

That was more than enough offensive support for the OCC pitching staff as Ben Davis, Cole Van Den Helder, Vince Inman, Jamie Olson and Davis Delorefice combined to hold the Jaguars (1-3) to just two hits, three walks and eight strikeouts over the course of the game.

After a scoreless first inning, OCC went to work in the bottom of the second. Tyler Lasch opened the frame with a walk, stole second and scored on an RBI-single off the bat of Todd Jackson. Jacob Gentry followed with a double down the left-field line to move Jackson to third and two batters later, Morgan scored Jackson with an RBI-grounder to short.

Coast picked up an unearned run in the third to make it 3-0 before an RBI-grounder by Joey Fregosi and a run-scoring passed ball produced another pair of runs to put the Pirates up, 5-0.

Southwestern made it 5-1 on an RBI-grounder by Joey Witkowski, but that would be it for the Jags for the rest of the game.

Staff starter Ben Davis (1-0) picked up the win after throwing four shutout innings and allowing just two hits with two strikeouts.

Javier Rosales made it 6-1 in the bottom of the fifth with a sacrifice fly before an RBI-grounder by Jackson and a run-scoring double to right by Gentry closed out the scoring for the Pirates in the bottom of the sixth.

Coast will battle elements and a solid squad from Cuesta College, starting on Thursday at 2 p.m. On Friday, the Pirates and Cougars will play a doubleheader on Friday, starting at 10 a.m. to avoid the raindrops on Saturday.
