Pirates pound out 13 hits in 8-3 win over Vikings

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College baseball team made it five wins in a row to start the 2018 season, thanks to an 8-3 nonconference win over Long Beach City College in Game 2 of their three game series on Thursday at Wendell Pickens Field.

Justin Brodt went 4-for-5 with two runs and an RBI for the Pirates, while Ryan O'Halloran saw three pitches in three at-bats and went 3-for-3 with an RBI.

On the mound, Miles Sandum picked up his second win of the season after throwing five scoreless innings, allowing four hits and four walks with three strikeouts.

OCC, the scheduled "visiting" game for Thursday's game (originally scheduled to be played at LBCC), got things going in the top of the second when Walker Keller reached first on an error, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Clifford Pradd and scored on an RBI-single to right by Brodt.

Coast broke the game open in the top of the fourth. When a walk by Pradd, a double to left-center by Brodt and an intentional walk by Hammer Madera loaded the bases, Caleb Anderson was plunked with a two-strike fastball to score OCC's second run of the game. Adam Serrano followed with a two-run single, which scored three runs following an error by LBCC's Carter White, putting the Pirates up 5-0. Tristan Hanoian closed out the Pirates' five-run frame with an RBI-single to right to put the "guests" up, 6-0.

O'Halloran came into the game in the top of the fifth and promptly lined an RBI-single to drive in Keller from second to put Coast up, 7-0.

Finally, in the top of the eighth, a bases-loaded walk by Serrano plated the Pirates' final run of the game. LBCC finally found the scoreboard with three runs in the top of the ninth, but it was too little, too late.

The Pirates and Vikings will wrap up their three-game series on Friday, beginning at 2 p.m. at Wendell Pickens Field.
