Pirates take series opener over Hornets, 9-4

FULLERTON -- A pitcher's duel for six innings was quickly washed away by the bats of the Orange Coast College baseball team as the Pirates topped Fullerton College, 9-4, on Tuesday in an Orange Empire Conference matchup.

With both teams tied 1-1 after six innings, the Pirates (19-4-1, 6-1 in OEC) finally broke through against FC starter Patrick Showalter (3-4). A triple by Joey Fregosi and back-to-back walks to Adam Serrano and Skylar Limonchi loaded the bases with nobody out. An RBI-grounder by Tommy Williams scored Fregosi to put OCC up, 2-1.

Williams stole second and after Tyler Lasch was intentionally walked, Davis Delorefice notched the big hit with a two-run single, scoring Serrano and Williams to make it 4-1. Murphy Stehly capped off the four-run seventh with an RBI-single to make it 5-1.

That was all OCC starter Miles Sandum (4-0) would need as he held the Hornets (6-15, 1-6) scoreless in the seventh to cap off his afternoon. The sophomore allowed just one run on four hits with one walk and five strikeouts over seven innings to pick up the win.

Coast blew the game open in the top of the eighth with another four-run frame, capped off with RBI-hits by Serrano and Williams and a two-run single off the bat of Lasch.

Williams went 2-for-5 with three runs and two RBI for the Pirates, while Stehly went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Delorefice added a hit and three RBI.

Game 2 of this three-game series will take place on Thursday at Wendell Pickens Field, beginning at 2 p.m.
