Penny named Southern Division Offensive Player of the Week

COSTA MESA -- Orange Coast College running back Robert Penny was named the Southern California Football Association Southern Division's Offensive Player of the Week after leading the Pirates to a 34-12 win over Long Beach City College on Saturday.
 
Penny, a 5-foot-11, 210-pound sophomore from Norwalk High School, rushed for a season-high 164 yards and two touchdowns on 34 carries to help lift Coast to its second win in a row (2-1).
 
For the season, Penny has rushed for 295 yards -- the highest total in the Southern Division -- with three touchdowns on 61 carries. His 98.3 yards-per-game average also leads the division.
 
Penny, who rushed for 608 yards and seven TDs as a freshman in 2010, is currently eighth among all Southern California running backs in rushing yards.
 
As a freshman, Penny earned second-team, all-conference honors with his solid play for OCC.
 
Penny and the Pirates will open up Southern Division play on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Palomar College at OCC's LeBard Stadium.
 
The Pirates and Comets are both 2-1 heading into Saturday's matchup.
 
According to the California Community College Football Coaches Association polls, the Comets enter Saturday's game ranked No. 5 in Southern California, while the Pirates are ranked 18th.
