Pirates run over by Griffins

COSTA MESA -- It was an old-fashioned trip to the woodshed for the Orange Coast College football team as the Pirates fell 77-19 to visiting Grossmont on Saturday at LeBard Stadium.

The Griffins (4-1, 2-0 in the Southern Conference) -- ranked among the top offensive teams in the Southern California Football Association -- put on a historical offensive display against the Pirates (1-4, 0-2). Grossmont threw for 644 yards and rushed for 266 for a final tally of 910 total yards.

Grossmont had 16 plays that went for more than 20 yards against the shellshocked OCC defense. In fact, the Griffins had three more opportunities to score but were stopped by a missed field goal, a turnover on downs and an interception in the end zone by OCC's Jordan Davidson.

Coast traded blows with the Griffins early as Larenzo Williams scored on a 40-yard touchdown run and quarterback Jack Foster connected with A.J. Holman on a 7-yard touchdown pass to make it 14-13 with 8:31 left in the second quarter.

But from there, it was ALL Grossmont. Quarterback William Abt -- who connected on 14 straight attempts during the game -- finished with 580 yards passing and six touchdowns on 32-of-44 passing. His favorite target of the afternoon was 6-foot-5 standout wide receiver Tim Patrick, who caught seven passes for 201 yards and two TDs.

While the passing game was clicking on all cylinders, Grossmont running back Treyous Jarrells came through with 165 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries.

Foster went 15-of-25 passing for 195 yards and on touchdown, while backup quarterback Jon Newsom added 120 yards and one touchdown with two interceptions on 7-of-14 passing.

OCC receiver Treydonte Hill had a solid game for the Pirates with 126 receiving yards. Holman (seven catches, 74 yards) and D.J. McFadden (five catches, 73 yards) each had touchdown receptions for Coast.

Coast will return to action on Saturday at the College of the Desert, beginning at 6 p.m.

GAME NOTES -- The 77 points allowed was the most ever given up in OCC school history, breaking the previous mark of 66 against Mt. San Antonio in 1997. The 58-point loss also set a school record previously held by the 1961 Pirates against Santa Ana (64-7).
