Fourth-quarter rally lifts Pirates past Roadrunners

PALM DESERT -- The Orange Coast College football team used a key fourth-quarter rally to snap a three-game losing streak and top College of the Desert, 40-30, on Saturday night at COD.

Trailing 30-20 early in the fourth quarter, the Pirates (2-4) ripped off 20 unanswered points to top the Roadrunners (0-5).

Quarterback Jack Foster threw for 318 yards and two touchdowns on 24-of-42 passing. Wide receiver Darren Hambrick used his 6-foot-5 frame to his advantage and pulled in seven receptions for 101 yards, while teammate D.J. McFadden added four catches for 81 yards and one touchdown.

Running back Larenzo Williams made the most of his 19 carries, rushing for 181 yards (9.5 yards per carry) and two touchdowns.

The comeback started when Williams dashed into the end zone on a 21-yard touchdown run with 10:48 remaining. After a blocked extra-point attempt, the Pirates trailed 30-26.

Desert drove down the field on its next possession and had a chance to put the game away with the ball inside OCC's 15-yard line. But, a 28-yard field-goal attempt by Aaron Council sailed wide, keeping the Pirates within four points of the lead.

A nice punt return by Spencer Ludin put Coast inside Roadrunner territory and two plays later, Foster connected with McFadden on a 38-yard touchdown strike with 4:07 left, putting Coast ahead 33-30.

The Roadrunners crossed OCC territory and looked to regain the lead, but Jordan John came up with a big stop on third-and-3, forcing COD into a fourth-and-1. From there Roadrunner running back Jatny Gutierrez was stuffed by the OCC defense, turning the ball back over to the Pirates.

Coast put the finishing touches on the victory when Williams cashed in on a 53-yard touchdown run with 1:41 remaining to close out the scoring, 40-30.

The Pirates will return to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. when they face Santa Ana College at Santa Ana Stadium.
