Pirates suffer tough loss to Lasers in conference opener

IRVINE -- The Orange Coast College men's basketball team, winners of seven of eight heading into Wednesday's Orange Empire Conference opener with Irvine Valley, looked like the happy times would continue through the night. But, a late run by the Lasers spoiled the Pirates' party as IVC pulled out a 63-62 win.

The Pirates (9-7 overall), who led by as many as 17 and carried a 13-point advantage with six minutes remaining, went scoreless over the final two-plus minutes, while the Lasers (12-6) began their comeback effort.

The comeback was made complete when Daniel Chatman scored with four seconds left to put IVC ahead. OCC tried for the win, but a missed shot at the buzzer ended the bit for a Pirate victory.

Joshua Davis led the Pirates with 17 points and 7 rebounds, just one game after leading Coast to a 93-73 win over L.A. Trade Tech with a 33-point, 15-rebound performance.

Lloyd Wright added 12 points and eight rebounds, while Kupaa Harrison added 10 points and six boards.

For the Lasers, Jake Linsky had 15 points, while Chatman and Parker Sims came off the bench and scored 13 points each.

Coast will return to the Peterson Gym on Friday to host Cypress College, beginning at 5 p.m.
