Pirates top Chargers in double overtime, 84-82

COSTA MESA -- After a gut-wrenching loss two days ago, the Orange Coast College men's basketball team learned from the past and pulled out a hard-fought, 84-82, double-overtime win over visiting Cypress College on Friday night inside the Peterson Gym.

The Pirates (10-7, 1-1 in Orange Empire Conference) were led by freshman center Joshua Davis, who had 26 points and 11 rebounds, while Kupaa Harrison added 22 points and 12 rebounds and Lloyd Wright added 11 points and nine boards.

In a game that saw neither team gain a double-digit advantage over the other, Coast led by a point with eight seconds to go in regulation before Cypress forward Mike Magee was fouled, sending him to the free-throw line. After making the first to tie the game, his second attempt rattled off of the rim and the game went into overtime.

In the first OT, Coast trailed by two with six seconds remaining when Montana Garcia drove to the hoop and dished off a nice pass to Harrison, who made a four-foot jumper to tie the game at 79. OCC's Malik Skillern stole the inbound pass and nearly beat the game clock with a layup, but the horn sounded just ahead of the made attempt, forcing both teams into a second OT.

A made 3-pointer by Magee put Cypress (6-11, 0-2) up, 82-79, but the Chargers would be held without a point for the final 3:57 of the game. 

Jumoke Walker came through with a key made layup to trim the deficit to 82-81 with 1:40 remaining and after a Cypress turnover, Harrison drove the lane and put OCC ahead, 83-82 with 1:27 left to go.

It stayed that way until the final seconds, where Harrison made 1-of-2 from the free-throw line to make it 84-82. Chargers' guard Siah Mack was fouled with four seconds left and he was sent to the line with a chance to force a third overtime with two made FT attempts.

But Mack missed the first attempt, intentionally missed the second and Wright managed to pick up the loose ball just as the final horn sounded.

Brennon Palmer led Cypress with 21 points and 10 rebounds, while Mack and Magee each added 14 points.

Coast will play at Santiago Canyon on Wednesday night (5 p.m.) before returning to the Peterson Gym on Friday against Saddleback (5 p.m.).
