Pirates clean house with several all-conference honors
After winning 11 straight games to capture the school's first-ever Orange Empire Conference men's basketball title, several Orange Coast College players were selected to this year's All-OEC team, as voted on by the coaches at their end-of-season meeting.
Sophomore forward Kupaa Harrison and freshman teammate Joshua Davis were named Co-Most Valuable Players after guiding the Pirates to their first men's basketball conference title since 1979. Davis was fourth among all conference players in scoring with 501 points (17.7 ppg), while Harrison was close behind with 436 points (15.3 ppg). The duo combined for 464 rebounds, with Davis at 244 and Harrison at 206. Harrison also led the conference with 52 steals.
Sophomore forward Lloyd Wright, who racked up 369 points in 23 games (16 ppg) was a first-team, All-OEC selection.
The trio of Wright, Harrison and Davis have dominated play for the Pirates this season. Coast averages 75 points per game, with Wright, Harrison and Davis accounting for nearly 2/3 of the entire offense and 60% of the team's 35 rebounds-per-game average.
Sophomore guard Jumoke Walker was named the OEC's Defensive Player of the Year, while head coach Steve Spencer was named OEC Coach of the Year.
It's been an incredible run for the Pirates, winners of 19-of-21 games, including 12 straight. Coast (21-7) will play at Citrus College (27-4) on Saturday, beginning at 7 p.m. for a shot at the California Community College Athletic Association State Basketball Tournament, which starts on Friday, March 9 at Ventura College.
