Shorthanded Pirates fight hard, but fall to Chargers

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College men's basketball team left it all on the Peterson Gym floor on Friday night as the shorthanded Pirates battled hard, but fell 75-61 on Friday night against visiting Cypress College.

Jonathan Ileleji notched a double-double for the Pirates (3-13, 0-4 in Orange Empire Conference) with a game-high 20 points and 12 rebounds. Myles Woods added 17 points and four assists, while Andres Ortega added 16 points, including 4-of-8 from 3-point range.

For the Chargers (10-7, 1-4), Aaron Edison and Kamron Barnes each had 15 points as nine different Charger players found the scoresheet.

Coast came out strong and played with heart throughout the game, jumping out to an early 8-0 advantage. Ileleji used a pair of baskets and a made free throw to push OCC ahead before a 3-pointer by Jay Yu forced the Chargers into an early timeout.

Cypress took over from there and used a 28-6 run to grab a comfortable lead and never let it go the rest of the night.

OCC will return to action on Monday at Irvine Valley College, beginning at 6 p.m. The Pirates will return to the Peterson Gym on Wednesday against Fullerton College, beginning at 5 p.m.
