Pirates win marathon over Golden West, 110-108

COSTA MESA -- Myles Woods had 36 points and Jonathan Ileleji had 33 to lead the Orange Coast College men's basketball team to a hard-fought 110-108 win over rival Golden West College on Wednesday night inside the Peterson Gym.

Coast connected on 41 field goals (nine 3-pointers) and added 19 points from the free-throw line to give the hosts their largest point total of the year. 

It was a rather historic evening of basketball for the Pirates to wrap up the home schedule this year.

• The 110 points for the Pirates were the most in one game in 33 years, when Coast scored 118 against East L.A. College.
• The last time OCC gave up over 100 points and still won? Answer: The 1999-2000 season when the Pirates topped Cuyamaca 104-101 in overtime. The last REGULATION win? Answer: Opening game of the 1995-96 season (105-100 over Southwestern).
• The last time two OCC players scored 30-or-more in a single game? Answer: Duane Curtis and Adrian Reyes each scored 32 points against Citrus in 1996-97.

Both teams were on a scorching pace through the first half as the Pirates jumped out to a 55-48 lead after the first half.

GWC went on a 53-38 run and led 101-93 with just 3:53 remaining before the Pirates regrouped and found one final push.

Coast's defense forced five GWC turnovers down the stretch as the Pirates went on a 16-1 run and led 109-102 with 39 seconds remaining.

Playing their first game against the Rustlers at OCC since the 2004-05 season, the Pirates had to hold on for dear life as a Ricky Briseno 3-pointer made in 109-105. 

Woods made a free-throw before a pair of made FTs by Francis Dogani with 19 seconds left made it a three-point game at 110-107.

Coast had a chance to ice the game but a pair of missed free throws gave the Rustlers one final opportunity to even the score and the opportunity was there when Justin Kirksey was fouled on a 3-point attempt with 0.1 seconds left, giving GWC three free throws.

But Kirksey missed the first attempt, and with a fraction of a second remaining, it was all over at that point.

Coast will wrap up the regular season at Santa Ana College on Friday, beginning at 5 p.m.
