Pirates roll to 85-80 win over L.A. City

COSTA MESA -- Ronnie Davis had a huge night for the Orange Coast College men's basketball team with 36 points and five steals to lead the Pirates to an 85-80 win over L.A. City College on Friday night inside the Peterson Gym.

Davis had an outstanding shooting night, going 13-of-19 from the floor, 2-of-6 from 3-point range and 8-of-10 from the free-throw line.

Julian Daaboul added 12 points, nine rebounds and eight steals for Coast (3-3), while Michael Carabine and Sawyer Clemett each added 10.

For the Cubs (2-4), A.J. Robinson led the way with 24 points, while Caleb Shepherd added 16 points and Devan Edwards came off the bench for 11 points.

The OCC defense turned up the intensity, forcing 34 LACC turnovers. OCC had some struggles as well with 28 turnovers as both teams played their aggressive style of basketball the induced a combined 50 fouls and a combined 66 attempts from the free-throw line.

After overcoming an early deficit, Coast carried an 18-14 advantage, but watched it grow after a 17-3 OCC run pushed the lead up to 18 at 35-17.

A late Cubs run closed out the half, but the Pirates still carried a 45-37 lead into the locker room.

Coast carried the lead the rest of the way, in spite of several LACC runs to try and get back even. The Cubs got to within two at 82-80 and had the ball in the final seconds to try and force overtime or take the lead, but a missed layup was blocked by Davis and Chris Obiajulu was fouled. He made the first free throw and missed the second, but Daaboul picked up a clutch offensive rebound, was fouled and put the game away with two made shots from the charity stripe.

Up next for the Pirates will be the West L.A. College "Wild West Shootout", beginning on Thursday, Dec. 5 against Long Beach City at 7 p.m.
