Pirates take zap out of Chargers with 9-0 win

COSTA MESA -- It was a quick day at the office for head coach Chris Ketcham and his Orange Coast College men's tennis team as the Pirates rolled past visiting Cypress, 9-0 in an Orange Empire Conference matchup.

The Pirates (10-6, 4-5 in OEC) lost only 10 games the entire day and had straight-set wins turned in by Elmer van Butselaar (6-0, 6-2), John Lieu (6-3, 6-0), Darren Dinh (6-0, 6-0), Christopher Chiu (6-1, 6-2), Ross Ewart (6-1, 6-0) and Joseph Nguyen (6-0, 6-1).

It was a complete shutout on the doubles side as the teams of van Butselaar/Peter Hariri, Lieu/Philip Vu and Chiu/Aidan Arango cruised to 8-0 wins.

With two matches remaining (one nonconference), the Pirates will need a pair of road wins for playoff consideration. They play at L.A. Pierce on Thursday (2 p.m.) before wrapping up OEC play at Riverside City College on Tuesday (2 p.m.). The Tigers edged out Coast, 5-4, in their first matchup of the season on March 10 at OCC.
