Pirates pick up solid 8-1 win over L.A. Pierce

WOODLAND HILLS -- The Orange Coast College men's tennis team is making a strong case for a playoff spot by playing its best tennis of the season. That trend continued on Thursday with an 8-1 nonconference win over host L.A. Pierce College.

Despite a loss at No. 1 singles, the Pirates (11-6 overall) notched wins in their other five singles matches, led by Elmer van Butselaar (6-1, 6-2), John Lieu (6-1, 6-2), Chris Chiu (7-6, 4-6, 7-5), Peter Hariri (6-1, 6-0) and Ross Ewart (6-0, 6-0).

In doubles, Coast earned a clean sweep with wins turned in by van Butselaar/Hariri (9-7), Chiu/Joey Nguyen (8-2) and Philip Vu/Anthony Thai (8-5).

The Pirates will wrap up their regular season on Tuesday at Riverside City College, beginning at 2 p.m. A win over the Tigers would put Coast in third place in the Orange Empire Conference. In their first matchup at OCC, Riverside edged out the Pirates, 5-4 on March 10.
