Pirates roll past Cypress, L.A. Pierce

COSTA MESA -- It was a successful end to last week as the Orange Coast College men's tennis team defeated Cypress College, 8-1, on Thursday, before blanking L.A. Pierce, 9-0, on Friday to improve to 10-2 overall, 3-1 in the Orange Empire Conference.

In Thursday's conference road win over the Chargers, Coast swept through the singles and gave up only 10 games along the way. The singles wins came from Tam Duong (6-1, 6-1), Elmer van Butselaar (6-1, 6-0), Kevin Springer (6-0, 6-0), Sergio Andres Palacio (6-0, 6-1), Ho Kiu Tam (6-0, 6-0) and Phillip Vu (6-2, 6-4).

In doubles, the teams of Duong/Palacio (8-2) and Tam/Alex Shakas (8-0) rolled to victories.

On Friday, the Pirates too advantage of a depleted Brahmas lineup and had three wins by default. Singles wins were turned in by Duong (6-0, 6-0), van Butselaar (6-1, 6-0), Palacio (6-0, 6-4) and Tam (6-0, 6-0), while in doubles OCC's Springer/van Butselaar (8-1) and Duong/Palacio (8-0), cruised to victories. 

The Pirates will play at Irvine Valley College on Tuesday (2 p.m.) before returning home to face Fullerton on Thursday (2 p.m.).
