Pirates prevail over Saddleback, Fullerton at OEC tri-meet

MISSION VIEJO -- The Orange Coast College men's track and field team took care of business and posted wins over host Saddleback College (79-71) and Fullerton (92.66-52.33) at Friday's Orange Empire Conference tri-meet.

The Pirates' 400-meter relay team of Matt Oyakawa, Jeremiah Lewis, Gabe Warner and Jonathan Clayborne crossed the finish line with a winning time of 43.9 seconds.

Pirate freshman Gabe Warner took home the top spot in the 400 with a time of 50.19, outlasting Saddleback's Josh Suri (50.53) down the stretch.

Sprinter Jonathan Clayborne led an impressive pack of Pirates to a first-place time of 11.23 in the 100, followed by a 3-3-5 finish by David Dambre (11.39), Matt Oyakawa (11.39) and Josh Santos (11.55).

Hurdler Tommy Duong cleared the rest of the field by over three seconds in the 400 hurdles and won with a time of 56.28.

In the 200, Coast went 1-2-3, led by Gabe Warner's time of 21.98, followed by Chris Gonzalez (23.15) and Clayborne (23.37).

Gonzalez found the top of the podium in the triple jump, with a winning mark of 43-feet, 7 1/4 inches, while in the triple jump, Duong took the top spot with a mark of 143-7 1/2.

Coast will travel to Santa Ana College on Friday to compete against the Dons and Golden West College in another OEC tri-meet, beginning at 11 a.m.
