Pirates finish second at OEC Track Championships

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College men's track and field team finished second overall at the 2016 Orange Empire Conference Track and Field Championships on Friday afternoon at OCC.

The Pirates were led by standout runner Gabe Warner, who helped the Pirates to three OEC titles. The freshman took home the gold in both the 200 (21.65 seconds) and the 400 (47.5) and also helped lead the Pirates' 400 relay team to a winning time of 42.31 seconds, barely edging out RCC's group, who clocked in at 42.35.

The Pirate men ran into some tough luck in a couple of events. In the 400 hurdles, sophomore Tommy Duong was among the leaders just after the final hurdle was cleared, however in the final dash to the finish line, he tweaked his hamstring and had to settle for a third-place time of 57.29 seconds, behind Saddleback's Jonathan Grumbling (55.41) and RCC's Keeon Thomas (55.72).

In the 800, sophomore Eamon Smythe battled the Riverside trio of Joshua Silva (1:55.59), Supervoid Mack (1:55.74) and Alberto Rodriguez (1:56.08) down to the finish line, but was tripped up from behind by another runner near the finish line and slammed to the ground, just past the finish line with an injured shoulder and a fourth-place time of 1:56.38.

Other top-three times for the Pirates were turned in by Noah Rogers in the high jump (2nd, 6-feet, 1 1/2 inches), the 110 hurdles (3rd, 15.2) and the decathlon (3rd, 5,156 points), Bryan Boutilier in the high jump (3rd, 5-11 1/2), Jonathan Clayborne in the 100 (11.27) and the 200 (3rd, 22.43), Adolfo Cruz in the 1,500 (2nd, 4:06.04) and Jose Armendariz in the 3,000 steeplechase (10:13.25).

The Pirates will now prepare for the 2016 Southern California Regional Championships, which begin with the prelims on Saturday at Antelope Valley College, beginning at 9 p.m., with the finals on Saturday, May 14 at AVC, also at 9 a.m.
