Pirate men post solid marks at Long Beach invitational

LONG BEACH -- Under less than ideal conditions, the Orange Coast College men's track and field team battled the elements and some of the top two- and four-year programs in the area on Saturday at the 2019 Beach Opener, hosted by Long Beach State University.

It was a great experience for the Pirates, who went up against schools like Long Beach State, Pepperdine University, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, Biola, Cal State Bakersfield, UC Irvine as well as several other top two-year programs in the area, including Cerritos, El Camino, Santa Monica and Long Beach City.

Coast notched several top-10 performances, led by Michael Dobbs, who earned an 8th-place mark of 154-feet, 1/2-inch in the javelin throw. In fact, all five of OCC's top-10 marks came in field events, in spite of a constant deluge of rain throughout the event.

Pole vaulter Timothy Weaver placed ninth overall with a jump of 11-9, while Isaiah Galloway earned a ninth-place slot in the long jump with a jump of 40-7 1/2.

Tenth-place jumps went to the OCC duo of Ian Koontz in the high jump (5-7 3/4) and Bradley Bryant in the long jump (21-4).

Top individual runner for the Pirates went to Myles Aguilar, who finished 15th in the 800 meters with a time of 2 minutes, 2.71 seconds.

The Pirate multi-event competitors will return to action on Wednesday at the OEC Heptathlon/Decathlon, hosted by Santa Ana College, beginning at 10 a.m. On Friday and Saturday, the Pirates will compete at Cal State Fullerton at the 2019 Ben Brown Invitational, beginning at 10 a.m.
