Pirates go 3-1 at West Valley Tournament

SARATOGA -- The Orange Coast College men's water polo team competed in the West Valley Tournament this past weekend and the Pirates won 3-of-4 to start the 2016 season on a strong note.

In the opener, the Pirates took on San Diego Mesa on Friday and came out with a 10-4 win. Aeriel Ghelfond Levi led the Pirates with four goals, Skyler Chanove added three and Gavin Scott, Ilan Dayan and Kevin Dayan each contributed one.

Kevin Dayan added two assists, while Scott, Levi and Ilan Dayan each added one helper.

In goal, Alexander Furlong notched 10 saves for the win.

In Game 2, Coast rolled by Santa Rosa, 12-3. Parker Evans paced the offense with four goals and four assists, while Chanove added a goal and three assists. Scott and Ilan Dayan tossed in two goals, while single tallies were added by Levi, Kevin Dayan and Zachary Skinner

Furlong earned eight saves, while backup goalie Gavin Gray blocked three shots.

On Saturday, Coast fell in the tourney semifinals to host West Valley, 9-7. Evans and Chanove each had a pair of goals for OCC, while Levi, Kevin Dayan and Ian Tesdall each added one goal. Furlong stopped 10 shots in the loss.

Finally, in the tourney finale, Coast battled Cuesta College in a match that came down to the final goal. In the end, it was the Pirates who edged the Cougars, 10-9.

Kevin Dayan had six goals to lead the way, while Scott added two and Chanove and Tesdall chipped in a goal apiece.

But the star of the contest was Furlong in goal. The sophomore had a season-best 19 saves to keep the Pirates close throughout the match.

OCC will return to action on Wednesday at home against Saddleback, beginning at 4 p.m.
