Pirates split four matches at Riverside tournament

RIVERSIDE -- The Orange Coast College men's water polo team went 2-2  at the Riverside City College Men's Water Polo Tournament this past weekend, with some close contests throughout..

The first of these nail-biters came in the opening match when OCC topped Cuesta, 11-7. Coast led 6-3, only to see the Cougars creep back to tie the contest at 7-7, early in the fourth quarter.

But the Pirates rallied with the final four goals of the match to pull away. Parker Evans led the way with five goals and a pair of steals for OCC, while Ilan Dayan added two goals and Gavin Scott, Ariel Levi, Skyler Chanove and Kevin Dayan added a goal each. Alexander Furlong came through with nine saves and a pair of steals in the win.

Later in the afternoon, Coast battled one of the top teams in the state -- Long Beach City College -- and lost, 7-2. Evans notched both goals and Furlong came up big with 15 saves, but the Pirates fell a bit short.

On Day 2, Coast opened with a 10-5 win over L.A. Valley. Kevin Dayan led the way with three goals, three assists and a pair of steals, while Chanove contributed two goals and two assists. In goal, Furlong again came up big with 16 saves.

In the finale, Coast took on Grossmont and was edged, 9-7. Evans, Kevin Dayan and Ilan Dayan each threw in two goals, while Scott added one. Furlong notched 13 saves in the loss.

Coast will head up to Cuesta College for another weekend of tournament action, beginning on Friday.
